Club Races: April 28th

The 2018 Summer Series Club Racing series starts on the 28th of April… come join us for an afternoon of racing!

Our first club race is scheduled for SATURDAY, April 28. The Captain’s meeting is at 2pm.

As it is every club race, it is our tradition to bring an appetizer to share and whatever beverage you wish. Join us for the fun and a few lies from sailors as to how well they sailed that day! Additionally, this is a great opportunity to invite potential members to visit.

In the goal of enabling all the racers to participate in each race day, we are hoping to have a committee of volunteers to run the Race Committee for each of our club races. The Race Committee will be headed up by Courtney Autrey, and we hope to have at least four additional volunteers (barge + safety boat) for each race day.

Please contact Philippe (pbl@ideos.com) regarding your availability to help on the 28th of April and/or any subsequent race weekend in the future.

We look forward to seeing you on the 28th!

Annual Spring Clean Up on April 14th

We will be having our annual Spring Clean Up on Saturday, April 14th beginning at 9:00 am. Please come and join us to lend a hand in getting our club ready for the upcoming season. There are several projects that need our attention. Members of all ages and ability levels are welcome to participate. We will provide a grilled hot dog luncheon and refreshments for those in attendance.

Some of the projects we hope to accomplish include:

-cleaning and organizing of the kitchens, bathrooms, shower rooms, race room, and sail storage shed
-cleaning the beach and launching ramps and hauling off debris to designated area
-trimming growth along canal and parking areas
-repairing the back lot fence
-inspection and cleaning of barge and safety/mark boat
-replacement of pier boards

So mark it on your calendar, grab those work gloves, and come join us to get this sailing season started! Our first club race will be held April 28th and racing will continue every fourth Saturday through September. We will be posting an official racing schedule to include our keel boat series very soon. Please check our official website for calendar updates and information regarding our club and membership.

*Some of the projects planned will require the use of power tools, particularly the replacement of portions of the pier. If you are willing to bring cordless drills, saws, and extra batteries it would be greatly appreciated.

Lake Waccamaw – a ‘Carolina Bay’

The Carolina Bays are often presented as “mysterious” or “unexplained,” but years of
geological research has illuminated the ways in which the Bays form and evolve. Join
Dr. Chris Tacker, Curator of Geology for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences as we discuss
the current state of knowledge for the Bays and the means by which geologists gather
data to address questions.

February 17th at 1:30PM at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville.
