UPDATE: Club Racing: MAY 23

Fear not, racing is still on for Saturday! (Results have been posted)

We will not, however, be having our traditional pot-luck post-racing social for the May races. Instead, please do as you are comfortable. Bring your own snack/picnic items and enjoy the company of friends, or distance as you wish, or simply go your own way. The choice is yours to make.

Lastly, be sure that you read the Sailing Instructions on our website at https://waccamawsailing.com/racing/. Several changes have been made from last year, and I’ll be happy to address any questions you have.

Celebrating 50 Years with Photos from the Past

This photo is from September 27th, 1970 of the inaugural Summer Series winners of the Waccamaw Sailing Club.

Top: Rick Jennings (Wilmington), Joe Stanley (Wilmington), Joe Nesbitt (Wrightsville Beach), J.M. “Dick” Coburn (Whiteville), Billie & Tom Hayden (Riegelwood).

Bottom: Ron “Ronnie” Walters (Whiteville and current club member), Jay Will (Whiteville), Bill Smith (Whiteville), Charlotte Hicks (Wilmington).

The Waccamaw Sailing Club is celebrating our 50th Anniversary this sailing season. To celebrate, we are sharing photos from the past. Many thanks to the Coburn family for sharing a trove of photos from the club’s inaugural racing season. Stay tuned for our Throwback Thursday posts throughout the year.

2020 Summer Series Club Racing: MAY 23. It’s on!!

After a delay, the 2020 Summer Series Club Racing series starts on the 23th of May… join us for an afternoon of racing! The Captain’s meeting is at 2pm.

At 11AM, Gene has offered to continue his mini-courses on negotiating your way around the race course. These courses were a popular option among those uncertain about the basic rules and tactics of participating in racing. The best way to become a better sailor is to sharpen your skills with racing!

We depend on a committee of volunteers to run the Race Committee for each of our club races. For May, the Medford family will be running the Committee Barge, and we have a complement for the Safety Boat as well.

Carol Lawlor is our Primary Race Officer for the season.

ps. As it is every club race, it is our tradition to bring an appetizer to share and whatever beverage you wish. We aren’t sure what the State regulations will be for the weekend until Friday. So we’ll have to wait until then to know if we can do our customary pot-luck or not. Stay tuned!
